Born in Utah, Carlton began cello lessons at a young age under the guidance of Drs. Carey and Elliott Cheney.
He graduated with Honors from the University of Utah, where he studied with Pegsoon Whang, and earned his master’s degree from Roosevelt University CCPA Music Conservatory, studying with John Sharp, Principal Cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Carlton has played in ensembles across several major North American concert halls and has performed in masterclasses led by notable orchestral cellists such as Mark Kosower, Richard Hirschl, and Dane Johansen. Before his appointment as Assistant Principal Cello with the Helena Symphony in 2022, Carlton served as principal cello for the Roosevelt University CCPA Music Conservatory Orchestra and the Utah Philharmonia. In 2021, he was selected as first desk cello for the National Repertory Orchestra and selected as an Associate Member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
Following his appointment as Assistant Principal Cello with the Helena Symphony, Carlton relocated to Helena with his partner, Emma, and their three dogs—Ember, Saffy, and Mika. Together, they have embraced the vibrant community and natural beauty of Helena and the surrounding Mountain West region.
Carlton won the position of Associate Principal Cello with the Helena Symphony in 2024.
Experience
Carlton has extensive performance and educational experience, lending to a diverse understanding of the contemporary classical idiom. He is actively engaged in orchestral and chamber music performances, composition, and other musicological pursuits.
Composition
Carlton's musical creativity strives past the boundaries of the classical realm. Inspired by soundscapes found in nature, Carlton searches to create unique timbres in his productions. Primary genres: hip-hop, electronic, house, experimental, IDM, and ambient.
Recording
Carlton is a capable audio specialist who has spent hundreds of hours recording, mixing, and mastering in professional and home recording studios. His original compositions and recordings have been featured in full-scale music video productions, short films, and independent records. He is fluent in several audio production software including Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio.
Instruction
Carlton's kind and patient demeanor combined with his vast knowledge and personal experience make him a sought-after cello instructor. Over the past decade of teaching, Carlton has aided students of all ages towards success and achievement of their musical goals. Lessons are structured around the concepts of discipline, positivity, mindfulness, and empathetic musicianship to encourage and motivate student growth.
